About this capture

COLLECTED BY

Organization: Archive Team

Image 4 Formed in 2009, the Archive Team (not to be confused with the archive.org Archive-It Team) is a rogue archivist collective dedicated to saving copies of rapidly dying or deleted websites for the sake of history and digital heritage. The group is 100% composed of volunteers and interested parties, and has expanded into a large amount of related projects for saving online and digital history. History is littered with hundreds of conflicts over the future of a community, group, location or business that were “resolved” when one of the parties stepped ahead and destroyed what was there. With the original point of contention destroyed, the debates would fall to the wayside. Archive Team believes that by duplicated condemned data, the conversation and debate can continue, as well as the richness and insight gained by keeping the materials. Our projects have ranged in size from a single volunteer downloading the data to a small-but-critical site, to over 100 volunteers stepping forward to acquire terabytes of user-created data to save for future generations.

The main site for Archive Team is at archiveteam.org and contains up to the date information on various projects, manifestos, plans and walkthroughs.

This collection contains the output of many Archive Team projects, both ongoing and completed. Thanks to the generous providing of disk space by the Internet Archive, multi-terabyte datasets can be made available, as well as in use by the Wayback Machine, providing a path back to lost websites and work.

Our collection has grown to the point of having sub-collections for the type of data we acquire. If you are seeking to browse the contents of these collections, the Wayback Machine is the best first stop. Otherwise, you are free to dig into the stacks to see what you may find.

The Archive Team Panic Downloads are full pulldowns of currently extant websites, meant to serve as emergency backups for needed sites that are in danger of closing, or which will be missed dearly if suddenly lost due to hard drive crashes or server failures.

Collection: The Archive Team FortuneCity Rescue

From Wikipedia: FortuneCity was a webhosting service based in New York City. The service was founded in 1997 by Richard Jones and Dan Metcalfe, two British entrepreneurs. It had over one million users. It achieved some limited fame when it collaborated with Warner Brothers to create a community called AcmeCity, which allowed users to create a web site using WB characters, logos, etc. without infringing on copyright. When FortuneCity first came online, it offered a free web hosting account with 6MB disk space. Later, they increased the space to 10MB, 20MB and then 100MB. However, since upgrading to 100MB, the original virtual community design has been gone: The “virtual map” of each district is gone, the division of district is also gone, but the community, mayor and district ministers remains. Now, it has become merely a web host and an online selling website. The company went public in March 1998. It was oversubscribed 37 times after its initial offering. FortuneCity received its revenue mostly from advertisements. FortuneCity began as a free web hosting service, but they announced that after April 30, 2012, they will no longer be providing free web space, citing increasing costs as the reason.

Down With The DCI!

On December 1, 1998 the DCI made what was perhaps the most devastating decision in the history of Magic. They released the new banned and restricted list (seen below)…

Standard (Type 2) Constructed * Windfall is banned. * Tolarian Academy is banned. Extended Constructed * Windfall is banned. * Tolarian Academy is banned. * Braingeyser is UNBANNED. Classic Restricted (Type 1.5) Constructed * Stroke of Genius is banned. * Tolarian Academy is banned. * Windfall is banned. * Feldon’s Cane is UNBANNED. Classic (Type 1) Constructed * Stroke of Genius is restricted. * Windfall is restricted. * Tolarian Academy is restricted. Urza’s Saga TM Standalone Constructed * No Alterations. Rath Cycle Block Constructed. * No Alterations.

As you can clearly see, the DCI decided to render the Tolarian Academy utterly useless. The foul stench of this heinous decision permeated throughout the Magic community and debates erupted everywhere on the Net. How could the DCI possibly ban such a newly released card?!?! It was an imbecilic action completely without precedent in the game. Perhaps for the first time ever, a player could go out and buy a pack of cards for $3 and pull out a BANNED RARE!!! What a RIPOFF!!! Only a month earlier, pulling a The Academy out of a pack would have been great luck. Now, due to a paranoid rules committee, it is a virtually worthless card… The DCI has said, and I quote, “One of our goals is to promote the maximum number of viable deck archetypes.” That being said, does it make sense to SEVERELY cripple The Academy Deck? I think not. Apparently the DCI doesn’t consider the BANNING of Tolarian Academy and Windfall detrimental to the viability of The Academy Deck. That just does not sit well with me. The DCI gave the following explanations for their decisions to BAN these cards:

“Tolarian Academy. Simply put, Tolarian Academy gives too much for too little cost. Given the plethora of good artifacts with casting costs of 0 and 1, Tolarian Academy could yield tremendous amounts of mana for the cheap price of playing a land. The “Academy” deck quickly dominated all forms of Magic play from Classic to Standard. The card was not banned in the Urza cycle only because there have not yet been enough tournaments run in this format.”

OK, there is no arguing the fact that Tolarian Academy is an incredibly efficient card. But that is what most players want! You don’t build a deck full of $HIT cards! You build it with cards that work together to give you maximum efficiency. That is why The Academy Deck worked, because it was a superbly engineered deck that had an incredible synergy between all of its components. The Tolarian Academy was the focal point of its engine. Why should a card be BANNED for its quality? Furthermore, the claim that it “dominated all forms of Magic play” is utter bull$it! What about Sligh? Sligh took as many, if not more, tournament wins as The Academy did. But is the DCI going to ban Jackal Pup? Are they going to get rid of Ball Lightning? Are they going to attempt to DESTROY Sligh? Of course not! Sligh is acceptable for some reason. Does the DCI just have something against combo decks? When Prosbloom was huge they BANNED Squandered Resources in an attempt to kill its speed. Now The Academy Deck comes along, sometimes referred to as “Prosbloom II” and Tolarian Academy gets BANNED almost immediately! WHAT THE F@*K!?!?

“Windfall. Like Tolarian Academy, Windfall gives too much for too little–in this case, cards instead of mana. At just U2 to cast, Windfall can, in the right deck, yield up to seven cards for its caster. Windfall was another key ingredient in the “Academy” decks since it too took advantage of the number of good artifacts with low casting costs.”

Here we go again! Another stab in the back of The Academy Deck! Why didn’t these bastards at the DCI just say… “OK, here is the new Banned and Restricted list:”

  • The Academy Deck is BANNED (This includes the following…)
  • Tolarian Academy is BANNED
  • Windfall is BANNED
  • Stroke of Genius is BANNED
  • Time Spiral is BANNED
  • Mind Over Matter is BANNED
  • Intuition is BANNED
  • Mana Vault is BANNED
  • Voltaic Key is BANNED
  • Mox Diamond is BANNED
  • Lotus Petal is BANNED
  • Island is BANNED
  • Additionally any other cards which may be in YOUR Academy Deck are now BANNED (especially artifacts with casting costs of 1 or less.) The DCI went on to state…

“Some have argued that the “Academy” deck has not yet truly dominated the Standard environment, though few have claimed it won’t ever need to be banned. We decided to ban it now because we only have one more opportunity to ban and restrict cards before Regionals and Nationals, and we need to see what the “Academy-free” environment is like. Banning these cards now gives us three months in the new environment before the April 1, 1999 changes.”

This BAN-NOW-ASK-QUESTIONS-LATER attitude being adopted by a paranoid DCI is exactly what is contributing to the downfall of what used to be one of the most interesting and exciting games ever. This tendency of the DCI to BAN cards simply because they might be too efficient is disturbing to say the least. Fight for your right to play something NEW and EXCITING!!! Join the campaign to UNBAN THE ACADEMY today!!!
